Sam Jones enters the 2025–2026 season in his second year at the helm of the Virginia Wesleyan University men’s lacrosse program, bringing with him a unique blend of elite athletic experience, proven leadership, and a clear vision for building a championship culture in Virginia Beach.
A former U.S. Navy SEAL Officer with 10 years of distinguished service, Coach Jones joined the Marlins through the SOCOM Warrior Care Fellowship Program in 2024. In just his first season, he led the team to its first ODAC Championship Tournament appearance since 2016 and guided the program to its best conference record in a decade—setting the tone for a new era of competitiveness and excellence.
Originally from Annapolis, MD, and a standout at Severna Park High School, Jones had an exceptional playing career at the U.S. Naval Academy. He ranks in Navy’s all-time top ten for both points scored (142) and caused turnovers (34), becoming just the 31st player in program history to surpass 100 points. A three-time recipient of the prestigious William H. "Dinty" Moore Award as Navy's Outstanding Offensive Player, Jones also earned all-conference honors and was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-Freshman Team in his debut season.
Coach Jones's leadership extends beyond the lacrosse field. At the Naval Academy Prep School, he was the inaugural recipient of the 2nd Lt. “Bull” Barrett Award, given for exceptional dedication, selflessness, and leadership—qualities that continue to define his coaching philosophy today.
He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Affairs from the Naval Academy, a Master’s Degree in Executive Leadership, and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Strategic Leadership.
