Sam Jones

Sam Jones is entering his second season as head coach of the Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse program in May 2024, after serving in the United States Navy for 10 years as a SEAL Officer. In 2024, he joined the staff full-time through the SOCOM Warrior Care Fellowship Program.

Men's Lacrosse had their best season in recent years under new Head Coach Sam Jones, posting a 7-11 overall record and going 4-6 in conference play.  Their efforts secured the team a spot in the ODAC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2016. 

A native of Annapolis, MD (Severna Park HS), Jones comes to Virginia Wesleyan by way of the United States Naval Academy where he is in the top ten in points scored (142) and caused turnovers (34). Over his career, he became the 31st player in program history to record over 100 points and was awarded the William H. "Dinty" Moore Award, presented to Navy's Outstanding Offensive Player (3x). Additionally, over his career, he garnered all-conference recognition and during his freshmen campaign was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-Freshmen team. 

Beyond his athletic achievements, Coach Jones has exemplified leadership and dedication both on and off the lacrosse field. During his time at the Naval Academy Prep School, he was honored with the Inaugural 2nd Lt "Bull" Barrett Award, recognizing his outstanding hard work, unwavering dedication to the team, and inspiring leadership qualities.

Jones graduated from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Affairs and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Executive Leadership.
