AJ Smith joined the men's lacrosse program for the 2017 season after a stint at Ferrum College.

Smith served as the assistant coach of the men's lacrosse team at Ferrum since the 2015 season where he held the role of defensive coordinator. He helped the Panthers to an SEILC Conference championship in 2016 as Ferrum held opponents to 8.66 goals per game in league play. That squad set the mark for most wins in school history as five players were named to the All-SEILC team, including the Defensive Player of the Year.

The 2015 season was even better statistically as the squad surrendered just 7.66 goals per game in league play and harbored the SEILC Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-State selection.

In his two years serving as the recruiting coordinator at Ferrum, he had three players selected to the All-State Second Team, two being defensive personnel.

Prior to his time at Ferrum, he was the graduate assistant for men's lacrosse at Adams State University for 2014 where he served as the goalie coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. He assisted in the recruiting of 27 players in a one-year period.

AJ held the position of assistant boy's lacrosse coach at Stephen Decatur High School in spring 2013 where he also coached the goalies and defense while serving as the strength and conditioning coordinator.

Smith is currently the Commissioner of the Hampton Roads Boys' High School Lacrosse League.

Smith graduated from Virginia Wesleyan College in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology, focusing in elementary education.
