Jeff Butler

Butler joined the Virginia Wesleyan University baseball coaching staff in the summer of 2021, this will be his fourth season with the Marlins. The assistant coach comes to VWU after receiving his Masters in Sport Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University, while also volunteering at his alma mater Randolph-Macon College on the Yellow Jacket baseball coaching staff. 

In addition to serving as the assistant coach for the baseball team, Butler is also the team's Recruiting Coordinator and is the point of contact for new recruits interested in joining VWU baseball.  

In the 2024 season, the Marlins went 20-19 solidifying themselves as one of the most improved teams in the 2024 season with a +13 improvement from last season making it to the ODAC Championship tournament for the first time since the 2019 season. Thomas Crandall and Micah Fox were named to the All-Conference team and were named to the ABCA All-Region Team, the first time since 2019 that a player has made the All-Region team.

In 2023, the Marlins had one of the toughest strength of schedules in the country, facing 14 nationally ranked teams. The Marlins Matt Sinko was named to the Second-Team All-Conference as a catcher. 

Butler helped the Marlins post a 16-19-1 overall record in 2022 while going 6-13-1 in conference play in his first year with the team. Following the regular season, four Marlin athletes earned ODAC All-Conference honors catcher Matt Sinko, outfielders Jaelen Hines and Trent Hanchey, and pitcher Robert Cook. The Marlins had one of the top-20 strengths of schedule according to D3Baseball.com.

A native of Chesapeake, Virginia, Butler brings a wealth of baseball knowledge to Virginia Wesleyan. The former Yellow Jacket, was a four-year starter in the infield, primarily second base, and helped the R-MC baseball squad to the 2018 NCAA Division III World Series where the team finished third. Butler tied the single-game record for hits in a World Series game with five in the Yellow Jackets' second game against SUNY Oswego. He also made an appearance on SportsCenter Top 10 Plays in the final game of WS. Butler was a three-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) All-Conference honoree, twice named VaSID All-State, and D3Baseball.com All-Region. Prior to his senior season in 2019, Butler was named a Preseason All-American by the D3Baseball Podcast

Currently, Butler holds R-MC school records in At-Bats (662) and Hits (236) and is second in Runs (161) and Stolen Bases (54). He is also ninth in Batting Average (.356), fifth in Doubles (37), tied tenth in Home Runs (14), fourth in RBIs (122), third in Total Bases (317), and eleventh in Extra Base Hits (52). He was also seventh in the nation in Toughest to Strikeout in 2019 (4 strikeouts in 136 at-bats).

Before attending R-MC, Butler played at Western Branch High School where he helped the Bruins win the 2014 Virginia 6A State Championship. In 2015 the Bruins were the Virginia 6A South Regional Champions and State Semi-Finalists. Butler was named to All-Conference and All-Tidewater teams in 2015.

While attending Randolph-Macon, Butler played in the Coastal Plains League with the Martinsville Mustangs, the Valley Baseball League with the Strasburg Express in 2017, and again in the Valley Baseball League with the Waynesboro Generals in 2018.
