The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (44-0, 20-0 ODAC) opened the 2026 ODAC Championship tournament with another gritty postseason victory, defeating Bridgewater College 1-0 in game one of the best-of-three championship series at home in Virginia Beach.
In a matchup dominated by pitching and defense, the Marlins leaned on sophomore ace Hannah Hearl and a timely sixth inning breakthrough to improve to 44-0 on the season.
Hearl was outstanding inside the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just four hits and striking out seven batters. The sophomore worked out of multiple scoring threats throughout the afternoon and held the Eagles scoreless in every inning.
Virginia Wesleyan threatened early in the bottom of the first after Laci Campbell singled into left-center and stole second base. Campbell later advanced to third on a groundout, but the Marlins were unable to capitalize.
The Marlins continued to pressure Bridgewater starter Mackenzie Cauthorn throughout the game. Olivia Knight drew a walk in the second inning and stole second, while Sarah Prosser reached and moved into scoring position in the third after Samantha Deitsch stole second during the frame. Still, the game remained scoreless through five innings as both pitchers continued to settle in.
Bridgewater mounted one of its best opportunities in the top of the fifth after back-to-back singles put runners on second and third with two outs. Hearl responded with a clutch groundout to strand both runners and preserve the deadlock.
The decisive moment finally came in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Taylor McQueen opened the inning by driving a double into left-center field to put the go-ahead run in scoring position immediately. After a pop-up recorded the first out, Olivia Knight stepped to the plate and lined a single into left field, bringing McQueen home for the game's lone run and sending the Marlins crowd into celebration. Knight later stole second base, but the one-run advantage proved to be all Virginia Wesleyan would need.
Hearl slammed the door in the seventh inning, striking out two batters in the frame before a flyout to right field secured the shutout victory and gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead in the ODAC Championship series.
Knight drove in the game-winning RBI and finished with one hit and two stolen bases, while McQueen accounted for Virginia Wesleyan's lone extra-base hit with her sixth-inning double. Campbell also added a hit and stolen base in the win.
The Marlins and Eagles will continue the ODAC Championship series with game two on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach.
