The Virginia Wesleyan University No. 1 ranked softball team (30-0, 12-0 ODAC) roll past ODAC opponent Averett behind two shutouts.
Before the start of the game, the Marlins Softball team had its 16th Annual Strike Out Cancer Event.
Game One:
No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time setting the tone in game one, cruising to an 8-0 win behind an explosive start and dominant pitching.
The Marlins struck for three runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Taylor McQueen and Alison Pollack. The momentum carried into the second, where Virginia Wesleyan added two more runs to quickly build a 5-0 lead.
The offense remained relentless throughout the game, finishing with 10 hits while drawing eight walks. McQueen led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Pollack also drove in a pair. Sarah Prosser added a multi-hit effort with an RBI, and Morgan Tucker contributed to the scoring attack as the Marlins continued to apply pressure.
In the circle, Hannah Hearl was dominant from start to finish. She allowed just one hit over six shutout innings, striking out four and keeping Averett off balance all afternoon.
Virginia Wesleyan's combination of early offense and lockdown pitching ensured there was never any doubt, as the Marlins secured the run-rule victory to open the day.
Game Two:
The Marlins followed up with another strong performance in game two, defeating Averett 4-0 to complete the doubleheader sweep and remain unbeaten.
Virginia Wesleyan broke through in the second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to plate three runs. Olivia Knight and Riley Curtice each delivered sacrifice flies, while Emma Adams helped spark the rally with an extra-base hit.
The Marlins added an insurance run in the fourth inning, again taking advantage of an Averett error to extend the lead to four.
That was more than enough for Adams, who was outstanding in the circle. She tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out eight and not issuing a walk. Averett never found an answer, as Adams controlled the game from the first pitch to the final out.
