Late Push Falls Short as Marlins Drop Twinbill to No. 13 Eagles

The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (10-10, 2-5 ODAC) squared off with ODAC rival Bridgewater Eagles in a challenging doubleheader against the No. 13-ranked team in the nation, showing flashes of resilience despite falling in both contests.

Game One:

In game one, the Marlins looked to settle in early, but Bridgewater struck for two runs in the opening inning and added single runs in the fourth and sixth before breaking things open with a four-run seventh.

Virginia Wesleyan found its lone run in the third inning, manufacturing offense through patience and pressure on the bases. James Tassone reached to start the inning and moved into scoring position before Jason Caccavaro delivered a single to put runners on the corners. With the Marlins applying pressure, a wild pitch allowed Tassone to come home, cutting into the deficit.

Despite drawing six walks and putting multiple runners on throughout the game, Virginia Wesleyan couldn't find the timely hit to capitalize further, ultimately falling 8-1.

Game Two:

Game two saw a much stronger offensive showing from the Marlins, who struck first in the opening inning. Joshua Jones set the tone with a leadoff single, later scoring on a Gino Meienschein RBI double to give Virginia Wesleyan an early 1-0 advantage.

Bridgewater answered with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth, along with a single run in the seventh.

The Marlins continued to battle, adding another run in the fifth when Meienschein came through again with an RBI single to plate Jones.

Trailing late, Virginia Wesleyan mounted an impressive rally in the ninth inning. After putting runners on, Landon Carraway delivered an RBI single, followed by aggressive baserunning and capitalizing on an error to bring across three runs in the frame. The comeback effort pulled the Marlins within one, but the rally ultimately fell just short in a 6-5 final.
