The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (1-2) suffered an 11-4 loss to Methodist University in nonconference play.
Isaiah Dozier led the Marlins at the plate, recording a hit and an RBI in the ninth inning. Frank Jones added a run-scoring single in the eighth, and Nate Burton drove in a run in the seventh as Virginia Wesleyan attempted a late comeback.
Methodist took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and broke the game open in the third, scoring four runs on three hits to extend the advantage to 5-0. The Monarchs added another run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to stretch the lead to 8-0.
Virginia Wesleyan struggled to generate offense through the middle innings but broke through in the seventh. Burton singled to score a run and put the Marlins on the board. Methodist responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to push the lead to 10-1.
In the eighth, Jones singled to bring home a run and cut into the deficit. The Marlins continued to fight in the ninth, as Dozier singled to drive in a run and another scored on a throwing error, trimming the final margin to 11-4.
Methodist added a run in the eighth inning and held off the late rally to secure the win over Virginia Wesleyan.
