The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (28-1-1, 14-0 ODAC) defeated conference foe Roanoke 9-2 in game one, and 4-1 in game two.
Before the start of the game, the Virginia Wesleyan University softball program honored four more from its 2025 Senior Class: Halee Hawkins, Brooke Powell, Jenna Laird, and Autumn Boothe.
Game One:
Mackenzie Myers led the team going 3-for-4 with a double, scored four runs, had one RBI, and stole three bases. Morgan Tucker was 1-for-4, scored a run, and had one RBI, and teammate Laci Campbell was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Lauren Bible started in the circle and pitched 3.0 innings, with one walk, and Hannah Hearl came in relief to get the win pitched 3.0 innings, allowed five hits, two runs, and had three strikeouts.
The Marlins got on the board early in the first inning. After Sarah Prosser grounded out to second, Mackenzie Myers sparked the offense with a double to center field. Laci Campbell reached base after being hit by a pitch and putting two runners on. The Marlins took advantage when Morgan Tucker reached on an error by the center fielder, allowing Myers to come home with the game's first run. The score was 1–0 in favor of VWU.
The Marlins kept the momentum going in the second as Haley Sadler got things going with a single to left field. Alexis Hudgens was hit by a pitch, moving Sadler into scoring position. Prosser then reached on a fielder's choice, and errors continued to plague Roanoke as both Sadler and Hudgens advanced, Sadler scored on an error by the second baseman. Prosser stole second, and Myers drove in Hudgens with a single to center. After Myers stole second, Laci Campbell lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Prosser. Another miscue by Roanoke, allowed Myers to cross the plate to extend their lead to 5–0.
Roanoke finally managed to get on the board in the top of the fourth, but Virginia Wesleyan quickly responded in the bottom half. Prosser led off with a single, though she was erased on a fielder's choice by Myers. Myers then stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Campbell. Tucker came through with a clutch single up the middle, scoring Myers to make it 6–1. The inning continued with Olivia Knight singling through the left side, followed by an RBI single up the middle by Juliav Piotrowski, bringing in Tucker. After a pitching change by Roanoke, Brooke Powell came in as a pinch hitter and delivered a single to left-center, driving in Knight and pushing the lead to 8–1.
The Maroons were able to score in the top of the sixth inning to bring the score to 8-2. However, the Marlins added one more insurance run in the sixth as Myers singled to left and moved to second on a single by Campbell. Tucker then flew out to left for the first out. The Marlins showed aggressive base running when both Myers and Campbell stole bases, but a throwing error by the catcher allowed Myers to score. That extended the lead to 9–2, which proved to be more than enough as the Marlins' offense and defense held strong the rest of the way.
Game Two:
Julia Piotrowski led VWU's offense in game two as she went 1-for-3 with a double, scored one run, and had two RBI. Mirandah Jenkins was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base, and teammate Laci Campbell was 1-for-2, scored a run, and stole a base.
Lauren Bible pitched a complete game in game two as she pitched 7.0 innings, recorded four hits, and allowed one run, with two strikeouts.
After stellar defense and pitching from both teams, the scoring drought ended in the sixth inning as Roanoke scored a run to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, VWU responded aggressively to Roanoke's lead. Mackenzie Myers led off the inning and was walked, followed by Laci Campbell was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on base for the Marlins. The next batter, Morgan Tucker, walked as well, advancing Campbell to second and Myers to third. With the bases loaded and no outs, Julia Piotrowski then stepped up and doubled down the right field line, to score Myers and Campbell to put the Marlins up 2-1. With the pinch runner Riley Curtice on third, Joslyn Woodard hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Curtice to score to put Virginia Wesleyan up 3-1. Finally, Mirandah Jenkins singled up the middle to bring in Piotrowski, to extend the Marlins' lead to 4-1. Virginia Wesleyan had surged ahead with four runs on two hits, no errors, and one runner left on base.
Good defense and pitching in the seventh sealed the 4-1 win and the sweep for Virginia Wesleyan on Senior Day.
