The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team (6-1-2, 1-0 ODAC) records its first conference victory of the season with a 5-1 win over EMU.
Nolan Schulte led the team with three goals on four shots on the net,
Juan Tovar tallied one goal and one assist, and
Ben Haynes played 90 minutes in the net made one save, and allowed one goal.
Alex Moody,
Ilan Mejia, and
Ryan McAdams each added an assist and
Christopher Garcia Ortega registered his first goal of the season.
Virginia Wesleyan started fast as
Nolan Schulte had a shot on goal in the fifth minute of play, then in the ninth minute scored a goal off an assist by
Ryan McAdams to give VWU a 1-0 lead.
The Marlins offense kept up the pressure and in the 15th minute dispossessed the ball in the Royals defensive third and Schulte scored again to lead 2-0.
Almost exactly two minutes later, VWU attacked the right flank of the EMU defense with a through ball to
Juan Tovar who slotted it to the middle of the box to Schulte who scored to seal the first hat-trick of his collegiate career 17 minutes into the game.
The Royals bounced back and scored a goal less than a minute after the Marlins third goal to cut the lead to 3-1. The Marlins found the net again in the 36th minute of play as a long ball from
Alex Moody to
Christopher Garcia Ortega who was able to extend the Marlins' lead to 4-1.
The second half saw fewer goals than the first half, the Marlins added a fifth goal in the 49th minute as
Ilan Mejia received a nice pass from
Daniel Otlowski to put Ilan past a defense who dribbled into the box and passed it to the near post for
Juan Tovar who slotted the ball near post to seal the 5-1 win over EMU.
