The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (17-6, 7-1 ODAC) swept Averett University in conference action winning 4-1, and 7-3.
Game One:
Marlins scored first in game one in the third inning, with two outs
Sarah Prosser singled through the left side,
Laci Campbell singled to put runners on first and second, and
Karley Beltran doubled to left field to score Prosser from third to put VWU up 1-0.
The Cougars scored a run in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. However, the Marlins responded in the fifth inning with three runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead.
Autumn Boothe led the inning with a single, and pinch runner
Emily Halloway stole second. Prosser singled up the middle to move Halloway to third for
Laci Campbell who doubled to right center field scoring the runners to go up 3-1. Two batters later
Emma Adams singled through the left side to score Campbell from second.
Sarah Prosser had a great game going 3-for-3 at-bat and scored two runs,
Laci Campbell was 2-for-3, with a double, scored one run, and had two RBI, and
Karley Beltran was 1-for-3 with a double and had one RBI.
Emma Adams came in relief and pitched 2.2 innings, allowed one hit, and had four strikeouts and
Savannah Laird started the game and pitched 4.1 innings, allowed one run on five hits, and had three strikeouts.
Game Two:
A slow start to game two saw Averett score two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Boothe singled to left field, and pinch runner
Emily Tucker stole second.
Olivia Knight doubled to right center field that scored Tucker and cut the Cougars' lead to 2-1.
In the third inning,
Karley Beltran walked with two outs and stole second, Campbell was hit by a pitch before Mackenzie Myer who single through the left side to score Beltran, tying the game at 2-2. With runners on first and second Adams singled up the middle to score Campbell from second. Then,
Haley Sadler singled to center field to score Myers and Adams to put the Marlins up 4-2.
Virginia Wesleyan extended their lead by three runs in the sixth inning.
Julia Piotrowski hit a lead-off double to left field, Prosser singled up the middle to put runners on the corners, and Prosser then stole second. Beltran singled to left field to score Piotrowski. Next, Campbell grounded out to advance the runners to second and third, followed by a two-RBI single from Myers to extend the Marlins lead to 7-2.
Mackenzie Myers led the offense in game two, going 2-for-4, scored one run, and recorded three RBI,
Karley Beltran was 2-for-3, scored two runs, and had one RBI,
Olivia Knight went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
Lauren Bible started game two and pitched 4.2 innings, allowed two runs, on two hits, and tallied four strikeouts, and
Emma Adams recorded the win in game two pitching the final 2.1 innings, allowed one run, on two hits, and recorded one strikeout.
