Laird Throws A Shutout in Game Two to Complete the Sweep of Guilford

The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (15-6, 5-1 ODAC) swept conference foe Guilford 8-4, and 8-0.

Before the game, the Virginia Wesleyan Softball program had its 14th annual Strike Out Cancer Ceremony.

Game One:
The Quakers started strong with a lead-off home run to lead 1-0.

The Marlins responded with a Laci Campbell single, Karley Beltran walked, and a double steal put runners at second and third. Before Mackenzie Myers singled up the middle to score Campbell. Myers stole second and Jenna Laird singled to third to load up the bases. Emma Adams hit a sacrifice fly to score Beltran from third to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead. Olivia Knight hit a double to left field scoring Laird and Myers to extend their lead to 4-1. With Knight at second, Julia Piotrowski singled to right center to score Knight. Piotrowski stole second and Halee Hawkins singled to right field to take a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the first. 

In the second inning, Laci Campbell got to first with a bunt, then Karley Beltran singled to put runners on first and third. Myers singled to left center to score Campbell to put VWU up 7-1. With runners on second and third Emma Adams reached on a fielder's choice to score Beltran and lead 8-1. 

The Quakers scored two runs in the third off one hit to cut the lead to 8-3. Guilford scored one run in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-4. 

Mackenzie Myers led the offense going 3-for-3 at-bat, scoring one run, and tallied three RBI, and three stolen bases, Laci Campbell was 2-for-4, scored two runs, and three stolen bases, and Olivia Knight went 1-for-3 with a doubles, one run, and two RBI. 

Julia Piotrowski recorded the win pitching 3.1 innings in relief, allowed one run on two hits, and had three strikeouts. Lauren Bible started the game and pitched 2.2 innings, allowed three runs on two hits, and struck out three. 

Game Two:
After a scoreless first inning, the Marlins got on the board in game two. Olivia Knight led off the inning hitting a triple down the left field line, Julia Piotrowski was hit by a pitch and stole second to put runners on second and third for Halee Hawkins. Hawkins reached on a fielder's choice to score Knight from third. Laci Campbell tripled to left field and scored Hawkins and Piotrowski the put the Marlins up 3-0. With Campbell at third, Karley Beltran doubled to score Campbell, and the next batter Mackenzie Myers doubled to center field to score Beltran to put the Marlins up 5-0.

Virginia Wesleyan added three more runs to their lead in the third inning. Jenna Laird hit a single to the shortstop and stole second. Two batters later Hawkins reached on an error by the pitcher to score Larid from second to give the Marlins a 6-0 lead. Sarah Prosser tripled to right center field to score Hawkins, and Campbell singled to advance Prosser home to put VWU up 8-0.

Laci Campbell was 3-for-3 at-bat with a triple, scored one run, and had three RBI, Jenna Laird was 2-for-3 and scored one run, and Sarah Prosser was 1-for-3 at-bat, scored one run, and had one RBI.
