Softball Go 2-2 in Leadoff Classic

The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (5-3) defeated No. 23 Concordia 11-3 in game one and lost to No. 7 Linfield 8-0.

The Marlins went 2-2 in the 2024 NFCA Leadoff Classic and newcomer Karley Beltran was named to the All-Tournament team for her weekend performance. 

Saturday's Games
Game One:
The Marlins started strong as Karley Beltran and Laci Campbell walked, and Alison Pollack was hit by a pitch to load up the bases for Olivia Knight who walked to score Beltran, and Mackenzie Myers to score Campbell to lead 2-0. 

Case Western Reserve scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead and scored one run in the seventh to seal the 4-2 win.

Karley Beltran went 1-for-3 with a double and scored one run, Halee Hawkins went 1-for-3 with a double, and Olivia Knight and Mackenzie Myers went 0-for-1 with an RBI.

Emma Adams pitched 5.0 innings, allowed three runs on five hits, and tallied eight strikeouts. 

Game Two:
VWU scored two runs in the first inning, as Sarah Prosser hit a lead-off single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Laci Campbell walked, and Pollack was walked to load up the bases for Emma Adams who was hit by a pitch that scored Prosser, Laird Reached on a fielders choice that scored Campbell to put the Marlins up 2-0. The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. 

In the second inning, Olivia Knight doubled to left center, Piotrowski singled to center field to put runners on the corners for Halee Hawkins who hit an RBI single up the middle scoring Knight, tied the game at 3-3. 

Pollack led off the third inning with a single followed by a homer to left-center field to put Virginia Wesleyan up 5-3. Laird walked, and Knight singled to left center before Julia Piotrowski hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Sarah Prosser doubled down the left field line to score both runners and put VWU up 7-3. 

DePauw scored on run in the third and fourth to cut the lead to 7-5 heading into the fifth inning. 

The Marlins scored two runs in the sixth inning. Pollack started with a double and Adams was walked. Then, Laird reached first on an error by the left fielder that scored Adams and Emily Tucker

VWU added one run in the seventh with a Piotrowski walk, and then Hawkins reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Prosser then hit a double to left center that scored Hawkins to give Virginia Wesleyan a 10-5 lead. 

Sarah Prosser went 3-for-5 with a double, scored one run, and recorded three RBI, Alison Pollack went 3-for-3, with a double, and scored one run, and Emma Adams was 1-for-2 with a home run, scored two runs, and had three RBI.

Savannah Laird pitched 7.0 innings, allowed five runs, four earned runs on eight hits, and registered six strikeouts. 

Sunday's Games
Game One:
After a scoreless first inning, the Marlins broke the deadlock in the second as Jenna Laird got on base with a hit by pitch, advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher, advanced to third, and scored on a throwing error by first base. 

The Marlins increased their lead in the third inning as Laci Campbell singled through the right side, then Karley Beltran singled to third base to advance Campbell to second, and Pollack hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Campbell. With Beltran on first Emma Adams and Jenna Laird walked to load the bases for Olivia Knight who hit a single to left field to score Beltran and give the Marlins a 3-0 lead. Julia Piotrowskithen hit a two-RBI single through the right side to score Laird and Adams to give VWU a 5-0 lead. On the next batter, Knight scored on a throwing error by second base to go up 6-0.

Concordia scored a run in the bottom of the third to cut the score to 6-1, but Virginia Wesleyan scored two runs in the top of the fourth, Campbell started the inning by getting on base with an error by the shortstop, Beltran singled up the middle and Allison Pollack singled to score Campbell from second to lead 7-1. With runners on second and third Laird singled to right field to score Beltran and gave the Marlins an 8-1 lead. 

Neither team scored in the fifth inning, but in the sixth Virginia Wesleyan increased their lead by scoring three runs. Beltran led the inning with a single to left field and stole second before Pollack was walked. Haley Sadler pinch hit and reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher allowing Beltran to score from second. With Pollack on third Laird hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Pollack from third to give the Marlins a 10-1 lead. Knight hit a double to left center that scored Sadler from second to put the Marlins up 11-1. Concordia (Wis.) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth that cut the lead to 11-2. 

Karley Beltran went 4-for-4, scored three runs, and stole two bases, Olivia Knight went 2-for-4 with a double, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Allison Pollack went 1-for-2 at the plate, scored one run, and one two RBI. 

Game Two:
No. 7 Linfield scored four in the top of the first with a three-run homer. Scored one in the second, two in the fourth, and one run in the fifth to seal the 8-0 win over the Marlins. 

Savannah Laird pitched 5.0 innings, allowed eight runs (six earned), on ten hits, and had one strikeout. 

Allison Pollack went 2-for-3 with a double, and teammate Karley Beltran went 1-for-3.
