The Marlins lost to No. 21 University of Lynchburg 19-10 in a mid-week conference matchup.
The Hornets wasted no time getting runs on the board as they struck first in the top of the first. A leadoff walk by the Hornets, followed by a double to open up the scoring, and made it a 1-0 game. A single scored another run to make it a 2-0 lead for the Hornets.
The Marlins got some runs on the board in the top of the second, starting with Junior
Nick Sylvester who reached base because of an error. Senior Sam Kasprow hit a single that scored Sylvester from second to make the score 2-1.
Lynchburg added three more runs in their half of the second inning. A two-run homer made it a 4-1 game. A few errors by the Marlins allowed another Hornet to score making the score 5-1. The Marlins brought the game to within one in the bottom of the second. A leadoff walk by Senior
Thomas Crandall followed by Junior
Clay Clarke being hit by a pitch got two Marlins on base with no outs. Senior Micheal Burton Jr. then walked to load up the bases. Senior
Micah Fox then singled to score Crandall to bring the score 5-3. Then Senior
Chris Mitchell Jr. singled and scored Clarke to make it a 5-4 game.
A leadoff walk and a single by the Hornets got two on base with no outs in their half of the fourth. Another walk loaded the bases, and a wild pitch by the Marlins scored a run for the Hornets. The next batter grounded out to score another run. The next batter also grounded out and scored another run to take the lead for the Hornets at 8-4. The Hornets added two more runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 10-4 lead.
The Marlins tied the game in their half of the fifth, starting with a single from Burton Jr., he then stole second before Fox walked to put two men on base. Megaro was hit by a pitch to load the bases before First year Nate Bryant hit a grand slam for the Marlins to bring the score to 10-8. Kasprow then singled and Crandall reached on an error. Clarke added two more RBI to his season by hitting a double, scoring Kasprow and Crandall to tie the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Hornets added nine more runs in the game, scoring four in the top of the seventh on three hits. In the eighth, the Hornets scored four runs on five hits. In the ninth, the Hornets hit a solo home run.
Leading the Marlins offense was Crandall who was 1-3 with a double, three walks, and a stolen base. Burton Jr. was also 1-3 with two stolen bases and two walks.
The Marlins return to the field on Saturday, March 23rd against Bridgewater in conference play.
