No. 13 Marlins Get Win Over Crosstown Rival No. 5 CNU

The No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan Marlins Softball team played cross-town rival No. 4 Christopher Newport University. The Marlins won the first game 3-1.

In game one, the Captains scored first in the top of the fifth. After a throwing error allowed the Captains player to advance to third after a single, the next batter singled up the middle to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. The Marlins answered back in their half of the fifth. Junior Jenna Laird singled to left field, and after stealing second she scored on a sac fly by Sophomore Karley Beltran, which tied the game 1-1. 

The Marlins took the lead in the bottom of the 6th after Sophomore Emma Adams walked, Senior Emily Halloway's pitch ran for Adams who ended up stealing second and advanced to third on a wild pitch by the Captains. The next batter, Sophomore Olivia Knight walked, then senior Julia Piotrowski singled to score Halloway and make it a 2-1 lead for the Marlins. A few batters later, Junior Halee Hawkins singled which scored Piotrowski from second. 

Junior Lauren Bible threw a complete game throwing five strikeouts, allowing six hits and three walks but only allowed one run. Offensively Sophomore Sarah Prosser was 2-4, and Piotrowski was 2-2 with one run and one RBI.

The Marlins return to the field Tuesday, March 19th as they open ODAC conference play against Randolph Macon College.
