Marlins Go 2-0 on Day One of the Raleigh Invitational

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated Piedmont 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, and 25-11) and William Peace 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-23, and 25-21). 

Game One: 
The Marlins jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in set one, the Lions went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 11-6. VWU went on a 4-0 run to lead 17-8. Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure and took set one 25-14. 

VWU continued their dominance going up 8-1 in set number two. The two teams traded points until Piedmont went on a 3-0 run to cut the Marlins lead down to 13-8. The Marlins outscored the Lions 12-2 to win 25-10.

In the third set, VWU built up a 10-3 lead and continued to put on the pressure to go on a 9-1 and lead 20-6. The Lions countered with a 5-0 run to bring the score to 20-11. The Marlins went on to win 25-11. 

Hannah Smith led the offense with 11 kills with a .308 hitting percentage, three digs, and two block assists, Abigail Mahoney recorded nine kills with a .412 hitting percentage, two solo blocks, one block assist, one dig, and one assist, and Emma Claytor had six kills with a .625 hitting percentage, two block assists, and one dig.

Haley Sutton led the team with 22 assists, nine digs, and one block, and Cara Caruso led the team with 15 digs, five assists, and two service aces. 

Game Two:
The Marlins fought hard to build an 8-3 lead at the start of the first set. After trading points, VWU went on a 6-0 rally to lead 18-7. The Pacers chipped away at the Marlins' lead, but VWU's lead was too large and won set one 25-13.

The Pacers fought back in the second set and took an 8-6 lead after going on a 5-0 run. In a hard-fought second set, William Peace went on a 3-1 run to increase their lead to 16-13, but the Marlins countered with a 5-1 run to take an 18-17 lead. The Pacers fought back and outscored the Marlins 6-2 down the stretch to win set two 25-22. 

VWU came out in the third set and led 7-3 early. The Pacer countered with a 7-1 run to take a 12-11 lead. After the team traded points in several intense rallies, the Marlins got the momentum back going on a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 17-15. The Pacers tied the game at 19-19, but the Marlins rebounded outscoring William Peace 4-1 to lead 23-20. The Marlins held off the Pacers and won set three 25-23. 

Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure in the fourth set and built a 9-5 lead in the fourth set. William Peace stormed back and took the lead at 11-10 on the back of a 6-1 run. The Marlins stopped the run with a 9-2 run to lead 19-13. The Pacers never gave up and went on a 5-2 run to cut the Marlins lead down to 21-18. VWU sealed the win by outscoring the Pacers 4-3 to win the fourth set 25-21.  

Hannah Smith tallied 16 kills with a .208 hitting percentage, 17 digs, and one block assist, and teammate Abigail Mahoney had 10 kills with a .364 hitting percentage, two digs, and two block assists.

Emma Claytor had six kills, one service ace, one dig, five block assists, and one solo block, Morgan Ludovici recorded 10 kills and 15 digs, and Haley Sutton registered 24 assists, 10 digs, two kills, and one service ace.

Niya Nash had 19 assists and seven digs and Cara Caruso led the team with 25 digs, three assists, two kills, and one service ace.
