Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Cruise Past Salem and Plymouth State

The Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team (4-0) cruised past Salem 3-0 winning 25-14, 25-20, and 25-21, and defeated Plymouth State 3-0 winning 25-12, 25-19, and 26-24. 

Game One:
Salem started the game strong and led 6-5 early in the set, but the Marlins came back and went on an 8-0 run taking a 12-6 lead. VWU kept up the pressure and outscored the Spirits 5-1 to lead 18-8. Salem chipped away at the host lead, but the Marlins won set one 25-14. 

VWU went up 3-0 in set one and extended their lead to 9-5 early in the set. The Spirits' fought back going on a 8-3 run to take a 13-12 lead. The Marlins countered with a 4-1 run to lead 16-14. Salem didn't go away and went on a 5-2 run to lead 19-18. The Marlins sealed the second set with a 7-1 run to win 25-20. 

Virginia Wesleyan carried their momentum into the third set building an 8-4 lead early, however, the Spirits countered with a 5-0 run to take a 9-8 lead. Salem held their lead for a time until the Marlins went on a 5-0 run to lead 16-12. VWU steadily held a narrow lead until they sealed the 3-0 win with a 4-0 rally.  

Hannah Smith led the Marlins on offense with 11 kills with a .231 hitting percentage, 13 digs, three block assists, and one service ace, Emma Claytor recorded 11 kills with a .579 hitting percentage, four digs, and three block assists, and Abigail Mahoney had nine kills with a .300 hitting percentage and one dig. 

Haley Sutton led the team with 22 assists and three digs, Cara Caruso registered a team-high 20 digs, four assists, and one service ace, and Niya Nash had 19 assists, three digs, two service aces, and one kill. 

Game Two: 
Against Plymouth, the Marlins wasted no time going up 8-1 early and extended their lead to 14-4. Plymouth fought back going on a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to 15-8, but the Marlins came back with a 6-0 run to lead 21-8. VWU dominated set one and went on to win 25-12. 

VWU's offense stayed hot in set two going up 9-5 early in the set. The Panthers chipped away at the lead and off a 4-0 run cut the lead down to 14-13. Virginia Wesleyan stepped up and went on a 7-1 rally to take a 23-16 lead and won the second set 25-19. 

Down 2-0, Plymouth was determined to get back in the game as they took a 9-6 lead in the third set. The Marlins cut the lead down to 12-11, however, the Panthers countered with a 4-0 run to lead 16-11. With a 20-13 lead the game looked to be going into the fourth set until Virginia Wesleyan went on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 20-19. Down the stretch, the Marlins outscored the Panthers 7-4 to seal the 3-0 win with a set three score of 26-24. 

Hannah Smith led the offense with 11 kills with a .259 hitting percentage, 12 digs, three service aces, two block assists, and two assists, Morgan Ludovici recorded 12 kills with a .346 hitting percentage, with nine digs, and two service aces, and Abigail Mahoney registered nine kills, with a .368 hitting percentage, three digs, and one block assist. 

Haley Sutton led the team in assists with 18, had eight digs, two service aces, and one kill, Cara Caruso had 17 digs, three assists, and one service ace, and Niya Nash had 16 assists, four digs, and one kill.
