No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan Split Doubleheader with Roanoke College on Strike Out Cancer Day

The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (24-8, 8-4 ODAC) split their doubleheader against conference opponent Roanoke College dropping game one 9-1 and winning game two 6-1.

Before the start of the game, the Virginia Wesleyan University Softball Program hosted its 13th annual Strike Out Cancer Day in memory of head coach Brandon Elliot's mother, Elaine F. Sears. Since 2009, VWU has raised over $180,000 for the American Cancer Society. The team honored cancer survivors and caretakers before the start of the game with flowers and pins. Along with a moment of silence for all those who have been affected by cancer. 

Julia Piotrowski led the offense as she went 3-for-4, scored two runs, one RBI, and stole two bases, Laci Campbell went 4-for-6 at-bat and scored one run, and Alison Pollack went 3-for 7, scored two runs, and two RBI. 

Game One
Roanoke struck first scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Marlins responded with one run in the third as Sarah Prosser reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before Julia Piotrowski singled to center field, which scored Prosser from second. 

The Maroons' stellar pitching kept Virginia Wesleyan off the board as they went on to win 9-1.

Julia Piotrowksi went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Laci Campbell went 2-for-2, and Alison Pollack went 1-for-3. 

Emily Seale pitched 5.0 innings in the loss, allowed six runs off five hits, and recorded one strikeout. 

Game Two
Virginia Wesleyan's offense awoke in the second game as they scored four runs in the first inning. Sarah Prosser hit a lead-off single, followed by a single from Laci Campbell that put runners on first and second. Alison Pollack singled to center field to score Prosser and put runners on second and third for Caitlin Myers. Myers grounded out to third base, scoring Campbell to lead 2-0. Emma Adams grounded out to second base to score Piotrowski, and Brooke Anderson singled to left field scoring Pollack from third to take a 4-0 lead. 

The Marlins extended their lead in the second, Julia Piotrowski walked and stole second before Alison Pollack hit an RBI single to lead 5-0 that forced a pitching change for the Maroons. Myers singled through the left side to move Pollack to second, and Emma Adams brought Pollack home with a single up the middle to lead 6-0. 

Roanoke got on the board in the third inning but went on to lose 6-1. 

Alison Pollack went 2-for-4, scored two runs, and tallied two RBI, Emma Adams went 1-for-3 and had two RBI, and Caitlin Myers went 1-for-3, with one RBI.

Lauren Bible registered the win in relief as she pitched 4.0 innings, allowed zero runs, six hits, and had two strikeouts.
