The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team (6-7, 3-4 ODAC) fell to Guilford 22-13.
Liam Murphy led the offense with six points scoring three goals and three assists, one ground ball, and one caused turnover,
Mark Sprague had five points with four goals and one assist, and
Jackson Dinger recorded two goals and two assists with two ground balls.
The Quakers started strong scoring the first three goals of the contest before the Marlins responded.
Daniel Auxier scored off an assist from
Liam Murphy, followed by an unassisted goal from
Sam Edwards to cut Guilford's lead to 3-2. Guilford scored again to lead 4-2, but Virginia Wesleyan quickly responded with a goal from
Myzaiah Garris received a nice feed from
Liam Murphy to bring the Marlins within one. The visitors scored three unanswered goals before the end of the quarter to lead 7-3.
In the second quarter, Guilford continued their offensive dominance scoring three quick goals to lead 10-3 before
Jackson Dinger scored an unassisted goal.
Mark Sprague scored off an assist from Murphy to cut the lead down to 11-5, but the Quakers added one more goal before the break to lead 12-5.
Second-half adjustments worked great for the Marlins as they scored three straight goals to cut the lead to 12-8. Sprague scored the first goal with a feed from
Floyd Wells,
Sam Edwards scored the second on a man-up opportunity with a pass from
Jack Butcher, and
Jackson Dinger scored off a pass from Sprague. The Quakers responded with a goal, but two minutes later Murphy scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 13-9. Guilford scored to goal to extend their lead to 15-9, however, VWU countered with two goals of their own, an unassisted goal from Sprague, and a pass from
Jackson Dinger to Murphy to cut the lead to 15-11 heading into the final frame.
Guilford scored at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Marlins responded as Murphy scored off a feed from Dinger to bring the score to 16-12. The Quakers scored four goals to extend their lead to 20-12 before Sprague found the back of the net with a pass from
Alec Gordon. Guilford went on to win 22-13.
Zack Tucker took the loss in net as he played 50 minutes, tallied 11 saves, and allowed 19 goals,
Alec Gordon led the defense with four caused turnovers, three ground balls, and one assist.
Sam Edwards did it all as he scored two goals, had two ground balls, three caused turnovers, and went 1-for-4 on the face-off, and teammate
Kris Barnum went 14-for-34 on face-offs and led the team with six ground balls.
