Virginia Wesleyan advances to the ODAC quarterfinals with win over Shenandoah in the play-in round

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated the Hornets of Shenandoah University 80-52 on Tuesday evening at Townebank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins, who were led by Jordan Crump with 21 points, advance to the ODAC quarterfinal game in Salem on Friday at 6 PM where they will face the No. 2 seeded Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins took the early lead going ahead 8-2 but the Hornets pulled back within one, 8-7, shortly after. Virginia Wesleyan went on an 15-2 run taking a 14-point, 23-9 lead as the clock ticked under the 10 minute mark. VWU continued to pull away from SU taking a 35-19 lead at the 5:14 mark after a 12-10 run. The final five minutes saw the Hornets score 10 points while the Marlins added eight to their score putting the score at 43-29 heading into the halftime break.

Virginia Wesleyan went on a 7-2 run to open the second half putting the score at 50-31 with 17:31 on the clock. About four and a half minutes later the Hornets cut the Marlin lead to 12 points, 52-40. VWU managed to hold SU at a reasonable distance of about 14 points, but increased their lead to 20+ at the 5:22 mark when Jordan Crump floated in a layup putting the score at 68-48. The Marlins only allowed four more points the remainder of the game while adding 12 point to their total to win the game 80-52 and advance to the ODAC quarterfinal game on Friday. 

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Jordan Crump with 21 points while Amarion Wilson was close behind with 18 points. Amari Moorer added 11 points as the last Marlin in double-digits. Eric Rowland had a huge night on the board with 15 rebounds. 

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to the court again on Friday, February 24, to compete in the ODAC quarterfinal game in Salem. The No. 7 seeded Marlins will face the No. 2 seeded Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College at 6 PM at the Salem Civic Center.
