The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (7-1, 1-1 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Lynchburg 70-55 for their first conference win.
Jordan Crump led the team with 14 points shooting 5-for-15 from the field, with four rebounds, and two assists, Khai Seargeant recorded 13 points shooting 5-for-12 from the field, one rebound, two steals, one block, and one assist, and Stylz Gardner had 11 points off the bench shooing 4-for-8 from the field, shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, adding two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Keys to the Game:
- Virginia Wesleyan's defense was key as they caused 14 turnovers (10 steals and four blocks) and scored 16 points off those turnovers, while the Hornets caused five turnovers and scored nine points off turnovers.
- VWU made more shots shooting 25-for-63 from the field, and 10-for-34 from three-point territory, while the Hornets shots 22-for-53, and 6-for-23 from beyond the arc.
- The Marlins made some key free throws down the stretch and went 10-for-14, compared to Lynchburg who shot 5-for-13 from the charity stripe.
How it Happened:
The Hornets scored first, but Jordan Crump opened the scoring for the Marlins with a three to take a 3-1 lead. Lynchburg kept the game close, but the Marlins went on a 5-0 run to jump out to a 12-8 lead. The Hornets responded with an 8-5 run to cut the lead down to 17-16.
Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 10-0 run to go up 27-16, the Hornets stuck around and countered with a 14-4 run to bring the score to 31-30 with 3:04 left in the first half. VWU ended the first half outscoring Lynchburg 8-3 to take a 39-33 lead into halftime.
The Marlins came out in the second half strong going on a 8-2 run in the first seven minutes of play to lead 47-35. LYN went on a 9-3 run to cut the lead down to 50-44 with just under ten minutes to go in the game, but VWU responded with a 7-0 run to lead 57-44. Lynchburg Rallied again going on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 57-50. With the Marlins holding a two-possession lead the Hornets had to press on defense VWU was able to break down and score two layups to lead 65-53 with 1:50 left in the game. Lynchburg had to foul to conserve time, but clutch free throws from the Marlins sealed the 70-55 win over the Hornets.
