The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team (26-6, 12-0 ODAC) fell to the No. 4 seed Washington & Lee 3-1.
Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set, but the Generals fought back to cut the lead to 10-9. Washington & Lee went on a 6-2 run to take a 15-14 lead. The Marlins fought back with an 8-1 run to lead 22-16. VWU went on to win the set 25-20.
In a highly contested second set, the Marlins built an 8-5 lead and extended their lead with a 5-2 run to lead 14-10. The Generals countered with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 14-14. The teams traded points, and VWU came out with a narrow 19-18 lead. The Generals went on a 6-1 run rally to lead 24-20, but the Marlins responded with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 24-24 to force extra points. The Generals won the next points, but the Marlins came back with two straight points to lead 26-25. The two teams alternated points to bring the score to 29-28 with VWU holding a slight lead. The Generals came back going on a 3-0 run to win set two 31-29.
The Marlins came out strong in the third set and built a 14-7 lead. However, W&L went on a 9-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. The Marlins broke the run with two kills from
Jenna Waters to lead 17-16. The teams traded points until the Generals went on a 4-1 run to end the set with a 26-24 win.
The Generals kept their momentum from the previous set and jumped out to a 15-3 lead. VWU chipped away at the lead to bring the score to 18-9, but the lead was too great and the Generals went on to win the fourth set 25-14.
Emma Claytor led the offense as she tallied a career-high 21 kills, with a .514 hitting percentage, three digs, and two block assists,
Hannah Smith recorded 15 kills with a .102 hitting percentage, a career-high 26 digs, one solo block, one block assist, and one service ace.
Abigail Mahoney had 12 kills, with a .300 hitting percentage, seven digs, and two block assists, and
