No. 3 Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime Thriller to No. 2 Lynchburg

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team (13-3-2, 6-2-2 ODAC) lost to Lynchburg 3-2 in double overtime.

The Hornets had a fast start scoring in the fourth minute of the game to go up 1-0. 

Virginia Wesleyan fought back as Ilan Mejia took hold of the ball near the 18-yard box and hit a beautiful right-footed shot that went past the Lynchburg keeper tying the game at 1-1. 

The Hornets outshot the Marlins 5-1 in the first half with the Marlins' keeper Jordan Smith making four saves. 

A tight contest in the second half with neither team giving an inch a goal was scored by the Hornets in the 62nd minute to take a 2-1 lead. 

The Marlins fought back with a change of formation, going to a 3-5-2 to gain control of the midfield. Virginia Wesleyan Managed to win several freekicks in dangerous spots and one that led to a goal from Nate Mitchell that tied the game at 2-2 at the 87:23 mark of the game to force overtime. 

Both teams went through the first overtime with one shot in the period. Lynchburg put some pressure on the VWU defense, which led to a goal in the 102nd minute of play to lead 3-2. 

With eight and a half minutes left in the game, the Marlins surged to force penalties but were unable to break down the Hornets' defense. 

Jordan Smith played 106 minutes of the game and made five saves in net for the Marlins.
