The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball (1-0) defeated Regent University 63-59.
The Marlins pushed the pace of play and had 14 fast break points compared to the Royals' four, the opponents had a 14-6 advantage in 2nd chance points and had 20 points off turnovers compared to the Marlins 14.
Virginia Wesleyan scored two quick buckets to lead 4-0, but the Royals came back with an 8-0 run to lead 8-4. The Marlins outscored Regent 8-4 the rest of the quarter to tie the game at 12-12.
Regent went on a 5-2 run to take a 17-14 lead, but the Marlins rallied back with a 4-0 run to lead 18-17. The Royals scored eight straight points to lead 25-18. However, VWU fought back, outscoring the Royals 7-2 to cut the lead to 27-25 at the break.
The Marlins had great halftime adjustments as they outscored the visitors 9-4 to lead 34-31. Regent came back to tie the game at 37-37, but the Marlins outscored the Royals 6-4 in the final minutes to take a 43-41 lead into the final frame.
VWU kept their momentum in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 48-41 in the first minute of play. The Royals never quit as they went on a 10-2 run to lead 51-50. The teams traded points, with the Marlins leading 56-55. VWU outscored the Royals 8-3 down the stretch to seal the 63-59 win.
