Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Fall to Bridgewater in Double Overtime

The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (6-10, 2-5 ODAC) fell to ODAC opponent Bridgewater in double overtime.

Before the start of the contest, the Virginia Wesleyan Field Hockey program honored its four-member senior class composed of Amanda Loesch, Willow Baker, Madeline Gonsalves, and Erin Fucito

Bridgewater had a fast start, scoring in the game's first ten minutes to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles doubled their lead in the second quarter and took a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Eagles outshot the Marlins 4-3, with each team making one save, and the Marlins had the advantage in penalty corner opportunities 2-1.

Halftime adjustments for the Marlins worked wonders as Ava Stauch scored off an assist from Shannon Gaffney to cut the Eagles lead to 2-1 in the third quarter.

Then, at the start of the fourth quarter, Katherine Druiett tied the game at 2-2. The Eagles had their chances to score with two penalty corners in the 54th and 56th minutes, but the Virginia Wesleyan defense held strong and kept the game tied. With the clock running down, VWU was awarded a penalty corner with 44 seconds left in regulation, leading to a shot for VWU that was saved by the Bridgewater goalie and forced overtime.

It was an uneventful first overtime, as neither team was able to create a goal-scoring opportunity. In the second overtime, the Eagles scored with 4:15 left on the clock to seal the 3-2 overtime win.

Emma Wehr played great in net, for her second start of the season, allowed three goals, made three saves, and played all 75:45 minutes.
