Marlins beat Quakers and Cancer in 12th Annual Strike Out Cancer Game

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 14 ranked Virginia Wesleyan softball team beat, not only Guilford College, but also cancer at its twelfth annual Strike Out Cancer Day.  

In the twelve years that the Marlins have held the Strike Out Cancer Day, they have raised $158,698 for the American Cancer Society.  The goal for this year was to raise $20,000. The Marlins hit their goal and then some with the final count being announced later this week. Along with the record fundraising, the Marlins extended their all-time record against Guilford to 34-9.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The Marlins displayed flawless execution when Caitlin Myers got the Marlins on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a single to left field that scored Julia Sinnett

Virginia Wesleyan added a second run in the bottom of the third as Ariana Rolle came home during Maria Weddle's at-bat as she reached first on an error.

The Marlins really got the offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning as the VWU scored six runs. The first run scored on a double steal attempt as Jenna Laird stole second and Julia Piotrowski came home following an error on the throw down to third from the catcher.  An error during Jaya Diggs-Hagwood at-bat score Larid from second to put the score at 4-0. 

Caitlin Myers singled to right field driving in a pair of RBI with Weddle and Halee Hawkins coming home on the play. The last two runs scored on a Karlee Fretz single through the left side that drove in Myers and Sinnett to give VWU the 8-0 lead in five innings.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The Marlins struck first again in the the first inning of the second game as Julia Sinnett hit a sac fly to left field the scored Ariana Rolle

After a scoreless second inning, Virginia Wesleyan kicked it into gear scoring five runs in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back doubles, one each from Karlee Fretz and Jenna Laird, scored three runs with Myers, Weddle, and Fretz all crossing the plate. Madison Hudson hit a rocket over the left field wall to drive in the last two runs of the third inning and putting the score at 6-0.

Neither team scored in the fourth inning and the Marlins wrapped things up in the bottom of the fifth with the last two runs. Julia Piotrowski came home during a Jenna Laird at-bat as she reached first on an error. Krissy D'Arco scored the last run off a single down the left field line by Abigail Craige drove in the final RBI. 


UP NEXT
The Marlins return to the field tomorrow Sunday, April 10, when they host Eastern Mennonite University for Senior Day. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 PM with the festivities regarding Senior Day starting at 12:45 PM.
