Lynchburg takes two in doubleheader against No. 9 Marlins

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan softball team dropped both games in their doubleheader against the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon at Tom & Betty Broyles Field at TowneBank Park. 


GAME 1 INFORMATION
Score: Lynchburg 4 - No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan 3
Record: No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan 19-7, 2-3 | Lynchburg 13-12, 4-1

INSIDE THE SCORE
After neither team scored in the opening inning of game one, Lynchburg put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the second inning to take the 2-0 lead. 

The Marlins were kept off the board and field with only one runner left on base in the opening four innings.

The Hornets added two more in the top of the fifth to go up 4-0, while Emily Seale pitched herself out of a bases loaded situation with a looking strikeout to leave three on the bags. 

VWU found a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one, 4-3. Julia Piotrowski rounded the bags after reaching initially on an error by the third baseman. She was driven in by Brooke Anderson with a single up the middle. Haleigh Settle and Anderson both came home a few at-bats later and both scored off an error by the catcher following a fielders choice for Abigail Craige

VWU left three runners on the bases at the end of the fifth, and two at the end of the sixth. After two final scoreless innings for both teams, the Hornets claimed the win in game one, 4-3.

Score: Lynchburg 3 - No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan 2
Record: No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan 19-8, 2-4 | Lynchburg 14-12, 5-1

INSIDE THE SCORE
Game two began similarly to game one with neither team finding a score in the first inning. The Marlins struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second inning as Madison Hudson hit a double to right center field that score Caitlin Myers and Brooke Anderson

Lynchburg responded in the top of the third with three runs to take the 3-2 lead. 

In the next five trips to the plates, the Marlins managed to get eight runners on the bases but could not bat them around to even up the score, as the Hornets won game two 3-2. 


UP NEXT
The Marlins are back in action this Tuesday, April 5, when they travel to Winchester, VA, to face the Hornets of Shenandoah University. The two squads will meet with a first pitch time of 4 PM in a midweek ODAC doubleheader.
