VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan softball team won both games in the doubleheader against Averett University in their home opener at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA.

INSIDE THE SCORE
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Marlins posted two runs in the bottom of the second inning as Jenna Laird crossed home plate following a double by Halee Hawkins for the first run, and Mackenzie Myers scored off a single by Jaya Diggs-Hagwood.
VWU put a third run on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Karlee Fretz blasted a hit out of the park for a home run. Neither team put a run up in the fourth but the Marlins added two more in the fifth going up 5-0. Julia Sinnett scored on a sac fly by Laird and Autumn Boothe came home on a single by M. Myers.
Both teams again went scoreless in the sixth inning but Averett in the top of the seventh inning put up a pair of runs to hold off getting shut out by Virginia Wesleyan.

The Cougars started the second game with a run right out of the gate but the Marlins countered with a solo run as Julia Piotrowski doubles to score Julia Sinnett.
Caitlin Myers in the second inning reached on an error and on the play her sister Mackenzie Myers scored putting VWU ahead 2-1.
In the fourth inning, C. Myers doubled and scored Brooke Anderson and Halee Hawkins who were on third and second respectively. Myers later came home on an error during Karlee Fretz at-bat driving the score up to 5-1.
VWU added two more in the fifth as Anderson and Hawkins crossed home plate off singles from Madison Hudson and C. Myers respectively.
The Marlins added three more runs in the six putting the score at 10-1 as VWU defeated AU in six innings. Haleigh Settle hit a triple with two outs and she was followed with another triple, this one by Mackenzie Myers. VWU got the walk off win when Brooke Anderson came to the plate and hit a bomb over the outfield wall to score the final two runs.

No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan is back in action next weekend when they head south to Georgia for the 2022 NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Marlins will take on six teams, all ranked in the Top 25, over three days including Illinois Wesleyan, DePauw, Pomona-Pitzer, East Texas Baptist, Central, and MIT.
