The Panthers took the early lead over the Marlins, leading by as many as five points, 11-6, in the opening four minutes of play. VWU collected themselves and came back to knot the score at 16 all by the 11 minute mark and took the lead on a pair of free throws by Nicholson. Virginia Wesleyan never looked back as they opened up a 12-point lead, 35-23, off a three pointer by
Corey Pelham with just over six minutes to play. Ferrum climbed within five points, 35-30, by the four minute mark, but Virginia Wesleyan closed out the half on a 7-5 run taking a seven-point, 42-35 lead into the break.
Ferrum remained close through the opening six minutes of the second half, trailing by as few as three points, 47-44, with 14 minutes on the clock. VWU answered with a 13-0 rally taking a 60-44 lead by the 9:30 mark. A layup by Nicholson put the marlins up by 20 points, 67-47, with seven and a half remaining. VWU held on to its 20-point lead through the final seven minutes to claim a 79-58 victory on senior day to end the regular season home slate for the Marlins.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by
Kelvin Nicholson with a career-high 18 points. Omari Deveaux and
Corey Pelham each contributed 12 points while
Tim Fisher,
Miles Wallace and
Eric Rowland each added nine. Fisher led all player with 15 rebounds.
Fisher (867) is now just four rebounds away from tying Marlin Hall of Famer, Brandon Adair, for rebounds collected in a career at 871. Fisher also needs just 20 points to eclipse 1,400 points in his career.
FERRUM LEADERS
The Panthers were led by Michael Spraggins with 15 points and eight rebounds. James Smith Jr. added 14 points as the only other Panther in double-figures.
