Marlins defeat the Cougars of Averett in first conference encounter between the teams

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated the Cougars of Averett University on Wednesday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. VWU defeated AU 59-58 behind 15 points from Omari DeVeaux and 14 from Amarion Wilson

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams were neck and neck from the very beginning of the game with neither team holding more than a four-point lead until the clock ticked under the 6:39 mark. A pair of free throws from Amari Moorer put the Marlins ahead 29-23. The Cougars closed out the remaining time in the first half on a 10-4 run evening the score at 33 all heading into the halftime break. 

The second half was much like the first half where it was back and forth the whole half. The Marlins held the lead throughout the first 12 minutes of the second half, while the Cougars claimed the lead for a few minutes from 6:30 to 3:30. A dunk by Amarion Wilson with 2:59 on the clock put Virginia Wesleyan up 59-58 and neither team scored in the final three minutes as the Marlins held on to win by one point for the second consecutive game. 

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Omari DeVeaux with 15 points, while Amarion WIlson scored 14 points and brought down eight rebounds. 

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to the court on Sunday, Dec. 11, when they travel to Fayetteville, NC. The Marlins will take on the Monarchs of Methodist University at 3 PM on Sunday afternoon.
