INSIDE THE SCORE
Roanoke got out to an early lead scoring the first five points of the game before the Marlins found their first two points off a pair of free throws made by
Adaje Williams at the seven minute mark. Virginia Wesleyan used the next three minutes to go on an 8-6 run pulling within one point, 11-10, as the Marlins called timeout with 4:20 on the clock. The teams traded buckets back and forth staying within a point of each other until the final 20 seconds when the Maroons scored three points off a layup and free throw to head into the second quarter with a 20-16 lead.
After an initial three pointer by
Lenah Clements put the Marlins within one, 20-19, Roanoke went on an 8-0 run taking a 28-19 lead until VWU scored again just under the seven minute mark putting the score at 28-21 following a
Celeste Rucker layup. RC scored four consecutive points followed by four points by VWU that drove the score to 32-25 with 2:50 remaining in the opening half. Roanoke went on a 9-0 run to close out the second quarter taking a 16 point lead, 41-25, into the halftime break.
The Maroons opened the third quarter with a quick four points going up by 20 points, 45-25. VWU answered with a 7-2 run putting the score at 47-32 with five minutes remaining in the third. Roanoke closed out the final minutes of the third on a 9-4 run taking a 56-36, 20-point lead into the final the minute period.
Virginia Wesleyan scored a quick six points to open the fourth off three points from Williams and a three pointer by
Jessica Jennings that put the score at 56-42 with nine to play. Over the next seven minutes the Maroons went on a 26-5 rally taking an 82-47 lead with just over a minute to play. The Marlins added five points just before the end of the period putting the final score at 82-52 with Roanoke claiming the win.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by
Adaje Williams and
Lenah Clements with 12 points each, while
Jessica Jennings added 10 points of her own. Williams led the team with eight rebounds.
ROANOKE LEADERS
The Maroons were led by Renee Alquizi with 22 points. Morgan Micallef added 15 points while Rose Sande scored 12 points and collected eight rebounds.
