Volleyball falls to Randolph-Macon in straight sets in ODAC Semifinals

LEXINGTON, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team fell to the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in straight sets in the ODAC Semifinal match hosted by Washington & Lee in Lexington, VA. Cara Caruso was named to the All-Tournament team following the championship match.

MATCH RECAP
The teams began the match tied seven all through the early services of the opening set. Randolph-Macon opened up a six point lead, 15-9, following an 8-2 run by the Yellow Jackets. VWU came back within two, 16-14, after a 5-1 run of their own. After RMC put together three points taking a 19-14 lead, VWU scored five straight to knot the score at 19 all. The Yellow Jackets closed out the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-21. 

Randolph-Macon jumped out to an early lead in the second set taking a 12-1 lead. The Marlins pulled within six points, 15-9, after an 8-3 run that was capped by a block from Sydney Collins and Alexis Davies-Hackenburg. VWU climbed back within four, 18-14, following another run of five points to three but Randolph-Macon closed the set with seven consecutive points to win 25-14. 

The Yellow Jackets opened the third set on a 7-0 run but VWU came back to trail 12-6 after a 6-5 run. Virginia Wesleyan pulled within three points following an 8-5 run that put the score at 17-14 before Randolph-Macon closed out the set on an 8-6 run winning 25-20 and taking the match in three sets.

Virginia Wesleyan's season comes to a close and the Marlins will return this fall under the leadership of new head coach Karissa Cumberbatch as current head coach Andrea Hoover-Erbig will assume the role of Executive Director of Athletics of the VWU Athletic Department.
