Baseball sweeps Guilford College in regular season finale doubleheader

GREENSBORO, North Carolina - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team swept the Quakers of Guilford College in the regular season finale doubleheader on Saturday in Greensboro, NC.

The Marlins opened the game  with a pair of runs in the top of the first and added two more in the third taking a 4-0 lead. VWU scored three more in the fourth (1) and fifth (2) innings to lead 7-0 before the Quakers had a big bottom half of the fifth during which they put up seven runs to knot the score. 

Virginia Wesleyan added three more runs to go up 10-7 as one crossed the plate in the sixth and two in the seventh before ending the game with four runs in the top of the ninth and giving up one last run to Guilford putting the final scored at 14-8.

Game two started with both team putting two runs on the board in the first inning while the Marlins posted four run in the second inning after Jake Ness hit a grand slam that scored Samuel Kasprow, Miles Christian, and Dylan Gentry in the process taking a 6-2. 

Guilford took the lead, 7-6 after scoring five runs between the fourth and sixth innings. Virginia Wesleyan responded with five runs combined in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to take an 11-7 lead which would be the final score. 

KEY STATS

  • Jake Ness drove in five RBI and score three runs on two hits in four at-bats. Ness had a grand slam homer in the second inning to aid in the Marlins win.
  • Matt Sinko tallied two RBI and a run on two hits in five at-bats. 
  • Jay Crusemire threw 2.1 innings giving up five runs on 10 hits. Adam Brooks threw three innings giving up two runs on six hits.
