No. 2 Marlins Softball earns No. 1 seed heading into ODAC Conference Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The nationally ranked No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team earned the No. 1 seed heading into the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament this weekend beginning on May 1. The Marlins earned the honor of the No. 1 seed after going 31-5-1 overall on the season and 15-3 against conference foes. VWU held the national No. 1 rank until recently an dropped one spot to No. 2 in the country.

The Marlins have had an incredibly challenging season playing 13 games against nationally ranked opponents and ended the regular season with six doubleheaders in ten days between April 16 and April 25, including back-to-back games against No. 9 Emory & Henry (4/22) and Shenandoah (4/23).

VWU leads the conference in a number of overall statistical categories including runs scored (283), hits (376), doubles (82), triple (19), homeruns (22), RBI (254), walks (121)stolen bases (153), team batting average (.369), team on base percentage (.440), and team slugging percentage (.551). When looking at just conference contests, the Marlins lead in all of the above categories except walks (2nd with 53).

Individually the Marlins lead in the following categories, runs scored, hits, triples, RBI, stolen bases, on base percentage. Jessica Goldyn sits atop the league in runs scored (50), hits (61), triples (8), RBI (42), stolen bases (55), and on base percentage (.566). Madison Glaubke sits second in the conference in runs scored (38), while Julia Sinnett is third in runs scored (33) and triples (5). In the circle the Marlin pitchers Hanna Hull and Emily Seale lead the conference in ERA with both having a 1.27 ERA against conference foes. Both pitchers each have seven wins in the circle to sit in a four-way tie for first in pitching wins in the conference. 

Virginia Wesleyan will host the No. 8 seeded Hornets of Shenandoah University in a best of three series with the doubleheader on Saturday, May 1, and the if necessary game on Sunday May 2.
