Women's Lacrosse picks up first win of season over Randolph College WildCats

LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team defeated the WildCats of Randolph College on Saturday afternoon in ODAC conference action in Lynchburg, VA.

FIRST HALF

  • Virginia Wesleyan scored first nearly three minutes into action with Helen Kenned-Butler putting the first goal in the back of the net for the Marlins. 
  • Randolph knotted the score at one all before Mikayla Szudera scored her first goal of the day 10 seconds later to give VWU 2-1.
  • RC took their only lead of the match after scoring back-to-back goals however VWU put five goals on the board in a six minute span to take a 7-3 lead with 17 minutes in the half. Camryn Gavula, Kennedy-Butler (2), Mikayla Callahan, and Lelia Dunn all scored in the run.
  • The final 17 minutes of the opening half saw the Marlins score 10 more goals while only allowing the WildCats to score two more as the teams headed into halftime with VWU leading 17-5. Gavula, Kennedy-Butler (2), Natalie Dunn (3), Szudera (3), and Callahan all scored in the final minutes of the half.

SECOND HALF

  • The Marlins came out of the break scoring five goals to increase their lead to 22-5 as Szudera (3), Melissa Runo, and Callahan scored on the rally. 
  • Randolph added two goals in the final 12 minutes as did Virginia Wesleyan, one each from Callahan and Szudera, as the Marlins rolled on to victory winning 24-7.

KEY STATS

  • Mikayla Szudera led the team with eight goals and two assists for 10 points. 
  • Helen Kennedy-Butler scored five goals with two assists for seven points and Mikayla Callahan tallied four goals and three assists for seen points as well.
  • Melissa Runo led the team with four assists and collected six draw controls.
  • Jordan Moilanen played 40:32 minutes in goal making three saves while giving up five goals.
  • Brittneyann Hoover played the remaining 19:28 minutes making three saves and giving two goals.

UP NEXT
The women's lacrosse team is back in action next on Wednesday, April 7th, when they travel to Harrisonburg, VA, to take on the Royals of Eastern Mennonite at 4 PM in ODAC competition.
