Softball scores 28 runs in a pair of wins over Ferrum; Anderson records grand slam

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan softball team defeated the Panthers of Ferrum College 12-0 (5 innings) and 16-6 (6 innings) in an ODAC doubleheader at Tom and Betty Broyles Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. The day was highlighted by a grand slam by Brooke Anderson in game one and Jessica Goldyn hit for the cycle in game two. Danielle Stewart also went seven of seven in her appearances at the plate.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Virginia Wesleyan made quick work of Ferrum in the top of the first sending the Panthers back to the dugout in order, while adding seven runs to the board in the bottom half of the innings taking a 7-0 lead early in the game. 
  • Danielle Stewart drove in the first two runs on a single to centerfield the scored Madison Glaubke and Julia Sinnett. Stewart, after advancing to third on a Katelyn Biando single, stole home for the third run of the inning.
  • A Brooke Anderson double drove in Biando, while Karlee Fretz and Anderson came home on a Krisy D'Arco single to right to bring up the score up to 6-0. 
  • The final run of the first was scored by D'Arco who came home on a ground out by Jessica Goldyn for the seventh point.
  • Ferrum recorded a hit in the top of the second but couldn't bat the runner around whereas the Marlins added another four runs on a grand slam by Anderson over the leftfield wall that drove in Stewart, Biando, and Fretz improving the VWU lead to 11-0.
  • The third inning was quite for both teams scoring wise while VWU added its final run in the bottom of the fourth as Fretz homered over the left field wall. 
  • Ferrum got two runners on base in the top of the fifth but again could not bat them around as the Marlins claimed the win in five innings per the softball mercy rules.

KEY STATS

  • Brooke Anderson led the Marlins in game one with five RBI and scoring two runs on two hits in her two at-bats.
  • Karlee Fretz scored three times on two hits in her two at-bats while also recording one RBI. 
  • Danielle Stewart and Katelyn Biando also scored twice with Stewart driving in two RBI.
  • Emily Seale began the game in the circle throwing two innings and giving up one hit. Julie Piotrowski recorded the win after throwing two innings during which she struck out two and walked one.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Jessica Goldyn started game two off with a solo homerun over the right centerfield wall for the first VWU score. 
  • A Julia Sinnett tripled to right center which scored Madison Glaubke, while Sinnett came home on a double by Danielle Stewart for runs two and three. 
  • The last run of the first inning was scored by Stewart who crossed home following a Karlee Fretz single to right.
  • Virginia Wesleyan's lead increased to 5-0 in the bottom of the second as Stewart drove in Goldyn on a single to centerfield.
  • The Marlins added five more runs in the bottom of the third taking a 10-0 advantage with Goldyn driving in the first two runs on a triple to right center field.
  • The next three runs all came home on doubles from the batter at the plate. Goldyn scored on Glaubke's double. Glaubke on a double from Sinnett, and Sinnett scored on a double from Abigail Craige.
  • The Ferrum bats came alive in the top of the fourth inning as the Panthers scored six cutting the Marlin lead to four runs, 10-6.
  • A double by Goldyn in the bottom of the fourth scored two, Krissy D'Arco and Julia Piotrowski, increasing the lead back to six runs, 12-6.
  • The Panther responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth bringing their total to eight runs as they trailed by four, 12-8.
  • VWU was kept off the scoreboard in the fifth but lite things on fire in the bottom of the sixth to ultimately win 16-8.
  • Goldyn scored on a throwing error that was an attempt to catch Glaubke stealing. Glaubke followed Goldyn home after Sinnett singled up the middle. A double to centerfield by Stewart score Sinnett, and Brooke Anderson single to right which scored Stewart for the final run.

KEY STATS

  • Jessica Goldyn drove in five RBI and scored four times on four hits in five at-bats. 
  • Julia Sinnett and Danielle Stewart each drove in three RBI while Sinnett scored thrice and Stewart twice. 
  • Madison Glaubke also crossed home plate three times in five at-bats.
  • Emily Seale (W: 9-1) pitched five innings giving up four hits and striking out two of 18 batters faced.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday, April 6, when they host the Eagles of Bridgewater College in an ODAC doubleheader at Tom and Betty Broyles Field at TowneBank Park. First pitch of game one is set for 3 PM with game two slated to begin at 5 PM.
