The No. 1 Marlins split doubleheader against Roanoke

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan softball team split their doubleheader against the Maroons of Roanoke College on Sunday afternoon in ODAC conference action at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Neither team was able to find a score until late in the contest when the Marlins scored Makenzie Watts on an Ariana Rolle single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to go up 1-0. 
  • The Marlins added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-0 and take the win in game one. Haleigh Settle scored the first run of the sixth after Katelyn Biando reached base on an error. A double by Daja Burgee to the shortstop scores Julia Sinnett and Biando. The final two runs cam in as Julie Fassl and Burgee both stole home to give VWU the five run lead.

KEY STATS

  • Daja Burgee led the team with a pair of RBI on three hits whil scoring once. 
  • Hanna Hull (W, 15-3) threw all seven innings giving up no runs on two hits while striking out 11 of her 28 batters faced. Hull tied the NCAA Division III record for wins in a career at 124 wins and looks to break that record as the Marlins enter the ODAC tournament this coming weekend.

  • Both teams went through the opening four innings without finding a score until the Maroons found a run in the top of the fifth inning taking a 1-0 lead. 
  • Roanoke found another run in the top of the seventh and despite the Marlins best efforts to bat runners in they couldn't complete the task before the final out was recorded.

NEXT
The Marlins now await the news of who they will host in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic tournament. Tournament games are best of three and the first round will be played on May 1-2, with a doubleheader on the 1st and an if necessary game on the 2nd.
