No. 1 Marlins defeat the No. 9 Emory & Henry Wasps in both doubleheader games

DANVILLE, Virginia - The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan softball team won both games in their doubleheader against the No. 9 Wasps of Emory & Henry College in a late week conference contest in Danville, VA.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Virginia Wesleyan resumed action in the top of the second inning with a 4-0 lead, two outs, and a runner, Madison Glaubke, on third and Danielle Stewart at the plate. 
  • Glaubke scored on a wild pitch while Stewart came home a couple batters later on a single from Karlee Fretz giving VWU a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second. 
  • VWU added four more runs in the top of the third as a bases loaded triple from Glaubke drove home Julie Fassl, Ariana Rolle, and Jessica Goldyn for three runs. Glaubke came home shortly after as Julia Sinnett hit a sac fly to center field.
  • Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth innings as the Marlins won game one 10-0 in five innings per NCAA mercy rules. 

KEY STATS

  • Madison Glaubke recorded six RBI and scored twice on two hits in her three at-bats. The senior was only a homerun away from completing the cycle in game one of the doubleheader. 
  • Jessica Goldyn crossed home plate three times with Glaubke, Danielle Stewart, and Ariana Rolle scoring twice.
  • Hanna Hull (W, 13-2) threw three perfect innings giving up no runs and no hits and walking one while striking out four of her 10 batters faced.

  • The Marlins again got things started with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning with Jessica Goldyn and Julia Sinnett scoring the two runs. 
  • After four scoreless inning, the Wasps found their only run against the Marlins on an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth putting the score at 2-1.
  • Sinnett in the top of the sixth answered the EHC run with a two RBI homer over the left field wall that scored Madison Glaubke on the play putting the Marlins up 4-1. 
  • Neither team scored in the remaining inning and a half as Virginia Wesleyan won game two sweeping the No. 9 Wasps 10-0 (5 innings) in game one and 4-1 in game two.

KEY STATS

  • Julia Sinnett recorded two RBI and two runs on one hit in her three at-bats. 
  • Hanna Hull (W, 14-2) threw all seven innings giving up just the one run on four hits while walking four and striking out 15 batters. With the win in the circle, Hull is one win away from tying the NCAA Division III record for pitching wins in a career.

The Marlins are home tomorrow, Friday, April 23, doubleheader against Shenandoah originally scheduled for Saturday but was pushed up a day because of weather. They will close the regular season with a make up game against the Maroons of Roanoke on Sunday, April 25, before heading into the ODAC tournament next week.
