Softball posts 28 runs over Royals of Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Virginia - The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan softball team swept the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University in a midweek conference doubleheader in Harrisonburg, VA. The Marlins scored 28 runs in the two games in a total of 10 innings played.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Virginia Wesleyan got things started scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first followed by a single run in the top of the second before adding two more in the op of the third to take a 5-0 lead through three innings. 
  • A Katelyn Biando double in the first scored Madison Glaubke and Julia Sinnett, while Daja Burgee hit a solo homer in the second. 
  • Biando and Karlee Fretz both scored in the third on errors by the Royals givng VWU its 5-0 lead. 
  • The Marlins in the top of the fourth added seven more runs going up 12 to zero.
  • Glaubke led off the inning with a double to centerfield and stole third before being driven home by Sinnett's double to center. Danielle Stewart followed with another double to center advancing Sinnett to third. 
  • Biando hit a single to right that drove in Sinnett while Stewart scored on a fielding error by the rigthfielder. 
  • After a few more batters reached base, a Julie Fassl single through the left side scored Makenzie Watts, who pinch ran for Biando. Burgee drove home Fretz while Fassl scored on an error by the shortstop and Burgee was the last run to cross the plate after Jessica Goldyn grounded out to secondbase.
  • The Royal found a single run in the bottom of the fourth to fend off the shutout but the Marlins laid down four more runs in the fifth to claim a 16-1 victory. 
  • Scoring for the Marlins in the fifth were Stewart, Watts, Emily Halloway, and Brooke Anderson as ten different Marlins scored throughout the game.

  • The Marlins bats stayed hot to start off game two as VWU posted five runs in the first inning to take the early advantage. Back-to-back homers from Jessica Goldyn and Madison Glaubke is what they Royals were welcomed by back in the diamond for game two. 
  • Julia Sinnett followed with a triple and was driven home by Danielle Stewart's single. 
  • With runners, Stewart and Katelyn Biando, on third and second, Krissy D'Arco singled to centerfield and drove in both runners after an error by EMU's centerfielder allowed the two to go home. 
  • VWU sent just one run home in the second inning as Glaubke scored after reaching base on an infield double. 
  • Virgina Wesleyan added three more runs in the top of the third taking a 9-0 as D'Arco, Ariana Rolle, and Glaubke all crossed home. The Marlins recorded three steals and Sinnett added her second triple of the game. 
  • Another three run inning for the Marlins in the top of the fourth increased their lead to 12 runs and would ultimately be the final score, 12-0. 
  • Julie Fassl doubled to left to reach base and came home on a D'Arco groundout. Goldyn drove in Julia Piotrowski, who walked, on a double to left field. And Goldyn ended the scoring after rounding the remaining two bases on a Brooke Anderson double to left.

KEY STATS

  • Jessica Goldyn led the team in game two with three RBI and two runs on three hits in four at-bats. 
  • Julia Sinnett and Krissy D'Arco both drove in two RBI and scored one time each in their respective three at-bats. 
  • Madison Glaubke was the only Marlin to cross home plate three times on two this in two at-bats. 
  • Emily Seale (W, 14-1) also threw a perfect three innings giving up no runs or hits while striking out three. 
  • Carla Hall threw an inning allowing just one hit and striking out one, while Sofia Eskola threw the last inning allowing three hits while fanning one. 

NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Thursday, April 22, with a neutral site game at Averett University against the Wasps of Emory & Henry. This doubleheader between two top-25 programs is a resumption of play from March 28 when the game was rained out in Rocky Mount, VA, and helps decide the top seed in the ODAC standings. The Marlins then follow with a home doubleheader against Shenandoah on Friday, April 23, originally scheduled for Saturday but pushed up a day because of weather. And will close the regular season with a make up game against the Maroons of Roanoke on Sunday, before heading into the ODAC tournament next week.
