Softball Marlins split midweek doubleheader at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Virginia - The No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan softball team split their midweek ODAC doubleheader against the No. 23 Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Both teams went scoreless in the first and second innings but the Marlins bats came to life in the third inning as VWU put three runs on the board in the half inning.
  • Jessica Goldyn drove in two runs on her homerun over the centerfield wall that score Arianna Rolle on the play while a ground out to second by Danielle Stewart scored Madison Glaubke to put the score at 3-0.
  • In the top of the fourth Goldyn drove in another RBI on a single to the shortstop that scored Julie Fassl and advanced Rolle to second. Rolle followed Fassl home on a sac fly by Glaubke putting the Marlin lead at 5-0.
  • Julia Sinnett's double down the right field line scored Goldyn from second and a few plays later, Sinnett scored on a single up the middle by Katelyn Biando giving VWU a 7-0 lead.
  • Brooke Anderson crossed the plate following a single from Goldyn to give VWU an 8-0 lead and after holding RMC to a three up, three down bottom half of the inning, the Marlins claimed the win in five innings per the softball mercy rules.

KEY STATS

  • Jessica Goldyn led the Marlins with four RBI while four other players each drove in one. 
  • Goldyn and Arianna Rolle each crossed home plate twice in the game. 
  • Hanna Hull (W: 9-1) threw a one-hit game while striking out four batters of 18 faced.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Yellow Jackets got game two going early putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning taking a 2-0 lead.
  • VWU knotted the score at two all in the top of the third as Danielle Stewart singled through the left side scoring Julia Sinnett and Jessica Goldyn.
  • RMC's pitcher Ali Celiberti in the bottom of the third hit a homerun over the left field wall to reclaim the lead and a double to right field later in the half inning scored another run putting the Yellow Jackets ahead 4-2.
  • The Marlins scored a single run in the top of both the fifth and sixth innings to knot the score again, this time at four all. 
  • The run in the fifth was scored by Sinnett off a Katelyn Biando single up the middle while the run in the sixth was scored by Arianna Rolle following a Madison Glaubke sac fly to centerfield.
  • Randolph-Macon took the lead again in the bottom of the sixth on a double that scored one to put the score at 5-4 in favor of the home team.
  • VWU got one on base in the top of the seventh but couldn't bat her around as the Marlins fell 5-4 in game two of the doubleheader.

  • Julia Sinnett scored two runs on three hits in four at-bats. 
  • Danielle Stewart tallied two RBI's on four plate appearances.
  • Emily Seale pitched four innings giving up four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one of 18 batters faced.
