No. 4 VWU Softball sweeps No. 3 CNU in non-conference doubleheader

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan softball team won both games over the No. 3 Captains of Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon at Tom & Betty Broyles Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 6-0 on the season while the Captains are now 0-2. 


GAME 1

INSIDE THE SCORE
Game one saw four scoreless innings by both teams before the Marlins found two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. CNU left three runners on base, first and second, while VWU left two stranded. 

The first run for VWU was scored on a bases loaded hit-by pitch sending Jessica Goldyn to first and advancing everyone a base scoring Brooke Anderson. On the following at-bat, Katelyn Biando hit a sac fly to center field that scored Maria Weddle for the second run of the game. 

CNU had an opportunity in the top sixth wth runners on the corners but failed to score leaving two on the bags. The Captains had another opportunity in the top of the seventh with bases loaded but the Marlins defense got the last out saving their win to take game one 2-0.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Brooke Anderson and Maria Weddle with a run each. Daja Burge, Weddle, and Kayla Womack all recorded hits, while Jessica Goldyn and Katelyn Biando both collected an RBI each. Hanna Hull (W: 3-0) threw all seven innings giving up two hits and six walks while striking out eight batters of 29 faced. 

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT LEADERS
The Captains were led by Patty Maye Ohanian and Kensley Hess with a hit each. Gracie Vallejos (L: 0-1) gave up two runs on three hits and stuck out three batters. 


GAME 2

INSIDE THE SCORE
Game two began with the Captains putting three runs on the board in the top of the first including a two-run homer by Patty Maye Ohanian. VWU responded in the bottom half with a single run as Julia Sinnett doubled to left field scoring Katelyn Biando from second base. 

VWU tied the score at three all in the bottom of the second as a Madison Hudson single to right field scored Madison Glaubke and Brooke Anderson scored on the next play as Kayla Womack hit into a fielders choice that saw Hudson tagged out at second.

The Marlins sent the Captains back to the dugout in order in the top of the third and in their at-bat opportunity added three more runs to take a 6-3 lead. VWU's runs came on a Daja Burgee homer run to left field that scored Sinnett and Mackenzie Watts. 

CNU countered in the top of the fourth putting three runs on the board to knot the score at six all. Bailey Roberts came to the plate with bases loaded and hit a double to right field that cleared the bases tying the score.

Virginia Wesleyan took the lead 7-6, on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch that sent Burgee to first and Jessica Goldyn home. 

Four more runs came home for the Marlins in the bottom of the fifth to give VWU an 11-6 lead. Goldyn doubled to left center scoring Anderson and Krissy D'Arco for runs eight and nine. Goldyn scored the tenth run after Biando singled up the middle and the final Marlin run was scored by Biando after Sinnett reached first on an error by the second baseman. 

CNU responded in the top of the sixth with two runs putting the score at 11-8 and the game was called official by the umpires prior to the bottom of the sixth due to darkness. CNU's runs came on a bases loaded sac fly that scored Maddie Hool from third and Caitlin Abernethy scored on the next at-bat following a single from Kaitlyn Hasty to the shortstop. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Daja Burgee with one run on one hit and four RBI in three at-bats. Jessica Goldyn and Julia Sinnett each drove in two RBI while Goldyn, Katelyn Biando, and Brooke Anderson all scored two runs apiece. Emily Seale (W: 3-0) picked up the win in the circle throwing 4.2 innings givin up six runs on 11 hits while walking two and striking out two. 

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT  LEADERS
The Captains were led by Maddie Hool with three runs on two hits in three at-bats. Caitlin Abernethy added two runs on two hits in two at-bats. Bailey Roberts drove in four RBI on two hits. Patty Maye Ohanian (L: 0-1)took the loss throwing 4.1 innings giving up 10 runs on six hits while walking seven batters.
