Marlins defeat the Avenging Angels in season opener against Meredith

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan softball opened their season on Sunday, February 16, against the Avenging Angels of Meredith College in a home doubleheader at Tom and Betty Broyles Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins defeated the Avenging Angels in both games to move to 2-0 on the season while Meredith moves to 0-4.

GAME INFORMATION
The No. 7 Marlins finally got their season underway, a day later than anticipated due to inclement weather, on Sunday, Feb. 16. 

GAME 1 - INSIDE THE SCORE
Game one began with four innings of scoreless action with Meredith leaving three on the bases while Virginia Wesleyan left six in the opening four innings. VWU kept the Avenging Angels off the board in the top of the fifth while the Marlins found the lone score of the game in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice groundout by Kaylah Duplain that scored Madison Glaubke from third.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Kaylah Duplain with an RBI while Madison Glaubke plated the only run. Hanna Hull (W: 1-0) pitched a complete game giving up two hits while walking two and striking out 12 batters. 

MEREDITH LEADERS
The Avenging Angels were led by Anna Goldman and Tatum Smith with a hit each. 


GAME 2 - INSIDE THE SCORE
Game two began with three scoreless innings before the Avenging Angels put two on the board in the top of the fourth on a double RBI and a run scored on a wild pitch. The Marlins answered with a solo run in the bottom half of the fifth on a single from Kaylah Duplain that scored Jessica Goldyn from third base.

VWU held MC off the board in the top of the sixth leaving two runners on bases while putting two on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Maria Weddle doubled down the left line to get the inning started. She came home on a single from Julie Fassl through the right side to knot the score at two runs each. The Marlins loaded the bases on a pair of singles from Madison Glaubke and Jessica Goldyn. Following a fielder's choice during Julia Sinnett's at-bat, the three base runners each advanced a base on a wild pitch scoring the go-ahead run as Glaubke crossed the plate.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Jessica Goldyn and Maria Weddle who each recorded a run on two hits. Kaylah Duplain and Julie Fassl each recorded RBIs. Carla Hall threw 5.2 innings giving up two runs on four hits while striking out three. Hanna Hull (W: 2-0) came in to pitch 1.1 innings giving up one hit and striking out one.

MEREDITH LEADERS
The Avenging Angels were led by Madison Hamilton with one run on two hits with one RBI. Rachel Johnson added a run on a hit, while Anna Goldman and Bryce Smith each added a hit.


UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Thursday, February 20, when they host N.C. Wesleyan in the Battle of the Wesleyan's at Tom and Betty Broyles Field at TowneBank Park. The Marlins and Battling Bishops take to the field for a doubleheader with game times at 2 and 4 PM.
