Bogan Ties ODAC Steals Record as Marlins Race Past Bridgewater in Sweep

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The No. 5-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College softball team swept Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Friday, winning game one 9-0 in five innings before taking game two 6-0. Senior Courtney Bogan tied the ODAC steals record of 52 steals in a season with five swipes on the day.

The record of 52 steals in a season was previously held by current Marlin senior Kayla Malkos who set the mark as a sophomore in 2014.

Game 1: 9-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory (5 innings)

The Marlins used small ball to score six runs in the second inning to jump out in front of the Eagles, plating those scores on six hits, five singles. VWC also earned a walk and stole four bases in the frame.

Kayla Dost led off win a single, coming around to score on a Jessica Lindsay double, the only extra-base hit of the frame. A Beth Ford RBI single scored Lindsay before Cassetty Howerin drove in a pair on a single to extend her league-leading RBI lead.

Blake Henderson singled home Kiersten Richardson to make it 5-0 before Howerin took advantage of a Bridgewater error to race home.

Mary Shipp (11-3) earned the win in the circle, allowing three hits in three innings. The Marlins stole nine bases as a team in the contest.

Game 2: 6-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory

The Marlins jumped out to a fast start in game two as well, posting another six-spot in a single frame.

VWC did all the damage in the first as Courtney Bogan led off with a single before stealing second and third, scoring on a Liz Bailey single. Howerin drove in Bailey on a double for a 2-0 edge.

Richardson made it 4-0 with a two-RBI double, which was followed by a two-run single from Ford as Richardson and Teresa Cardamone crossed the plate.

Kandis Kresinske (11-1) got the win after surrendering just two walks against six strikeouts in four innings. Kasey Newcomb picked up her first save with three innings of relief.

No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan (24-5/9-1) travels to Shenandoah University for an ODAC doubleheader on Sunday set to start at 1 p.m.
