Box Score 2 Howerin Breaks Single Season RBI Record as No. 4 Marlins Sweep
SALEM, Va. -- Sophomore Cassetty Howerin snapped the Virginia Wesleyan single season RBI record with four on Saturday as the No. 4-ranked Marlins defeated Roanoke College by scores of 7-1 and 2-0.
She now has 57 RBI on the year, topping the previous mark of 53 set by Jaclyn Quinn in 2010.
Game 1: 7-1 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
The Marlins scored three runs in the third and three more in the fifth to put away Roanoke College in the first game. Kiersten Richardson doubled to lead off the frame, but the damage was done on the infield as Liz Bailey singled to the pitcher to score Richardson as an error sent her to second and allowed Courtney Bogan to score from second. A groundout then plated Bailey for the 3-0 edge.
The big hit came in the fifth as Howerin cranked a three-run bomb to score Bailey and Bogan for a 6-0 margin.
Mary Shipp (16-4) earned the win after allowing one earned run on four hits in seven innings while striking out four.
Game 2: 2-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
The Marlins scored a run in the first, the only one the team would need in game two, as Bogan led off the inning with a double to left-center field. Howerin plated her on a single up the middle.
Bogan scored the second run in the third after singling and moving to second on a steal before racing home on a RBI single by Bailey.
Kandis Kresinske (17-1) won her 17th straight contest after scattering three hits over seven innings while striking out seven.
No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan (34-5/17-1) will head into the ODAC Tournament later this week as the No. 1 seed. The tournament will also be held in Salem, Virginia.
