Box Score 2 Kresinske No Hits Wasps as No. 4 Marlins Extend Win Streak
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Freshman Kandis Kresinske threw her second individual no-hitter, and third she was part of this season, in a 4-0 victory over Emory & Henry College in game two Saturday. The Marlins run-ruled the Wasps 8-0 in game one of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. The Marlins have won nine straight games.
The games were part of the softball team's eighth-annual Strike Out Cancer event, which featured moon bounces, food, a DJ, and a silent auction.
Game 1: 8-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory (6 innings)
The Marlins jumped on the board early with a score in the first inning, but it would not be until the late innings that Virginia Wesleyan could put away the Wasps.
Courtney Bogan led off the game with a line shot that was stabbed by the shortstop, but Bogan beat out a play to first. She then took off to steal second, advancing to third on a fly ball before scoring on an illegal pitch.
The Marlins added another score in the third on a Liz Bailey RBI single up the middle that plated Kiersten Richardson.
Bailey provided another clutch hit in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single down the left field line to make the score 5-0.
Taylor Galvin, Cassetty Howerin, and Blake Henderson each tallied an RBI base knock to close out the game. Henderson's proved to be the walk-off as her fly ball hit off the top of the wall in left-center field, coming back into the field of play as the eighth run crossed the plate.
Mary Shipp (14-4) allowed three hits while striking out four in six innings. Bailey finished with three RBI.
Game 2: 4-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
Howerin doubled home Bailey in the bottom of the third to make the score 1-0. Emory & Henry held the Marlins to that lone score, making Kresinske's no-hit performance even more important.
The Marlins loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but Riley Pudney worked out of trouble to keep it 1-0.
Kresinske allowed just one baserunner over the final three innings, seemingly getting stronger each inning.
Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of three walks that loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Bailey provided another clutch hit, bringing home Galvin on an infield single for the insurance score. Howerin reached on an error in the next at bat that allowed Bogan and Jessica Lindsay to score.
Kresinske (15-1) walked just two while striking out seven in the complete game effort. She has surrendered just two hits in the last 22 1/3 innings she's pitched dating back to April 6.
