Box Score No. 4 Softball Runs Past Avenging Angels in Non-Conference Tilt
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The No. 4-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College softball team scored 18 runs in a pair of six-inning victories over non-conference opponent Meredith College to extend its winning streak to seven games.
Game 1: 10-2 Virginia Wesleyan Victory (6 innings)
The Marlins jumped out quickly in the first game, blazing a trail on the base paths to score early runs. Courtney Bogan singled and stole second before Liz Bailey walked. The duo then pulled off a successful double steal in front of the dangerous Cassetty Howerin. The ODAC leader in RBI singled through the left side to score Bogan for a 1-0 lead.
A walk loaded the bases for Taylor Galvin who singled home Bailey. Jessica Lindsay capitalized on the Meredith pitcher's lack of control to draw a walk, the hurler's third of the inning, as Howerin jogged home. Kiersten Richardson made it 4-0 on a bunt single to the pitcher that scored Kayla Dost.
The Marlins scored a lone run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings before a three-run sixth merited VWC a run-rule victory. Howerin put the exclamation point on the scoring with a solo homer to lead-off the sixth.
Mary Shipp (13-4) earned the win after surrendering one earned run in six innings on five hits and two walks while striking out four.
Game 2: 8-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory (6 innings)
Howerin started the scoring in game two with an RBI single in the third inning to score Bogan. A pair of squeeze bunts from Blake Henderson and Dost made the score 3-0 heading to the fourth inning.
VWC made it 4-0 in the fourth as Bogan singled Richardson home. Galvin mirrored Bogan in the fifth, producing an RBI single to make it 5-0.
Virginia Wesleyan tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk off with its second run-rule victory of the day.
Kandis Kresinske (14-1) allowed two hits in six innings while walking one and striking out four. Her scoreless inning streak is at 15 innings and she has not allowed an earned run since March 30 to run her league-best ERA to 0.68.
No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan (28-5/11-1) hosts Emory & Henry College (13-21/5-7) Saturday at 1 p.m. for an ODAC doubleheader. It will be the team's eighth annual Strike Out Cancer event.
