Box Score 2 Softball Sweeps Averett in Saturday DH
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College softball team swept a doubleheader from Averett University Saturday, winning 14-1 in five innings before claiming a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
Game 1 - 14-1 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
The Marlins scored at least three runs in each inning of the first game to win in five innings. Mary Shipp (3-0) pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on one hit.
Courtney Bogan set the tone at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.
Cassetty Howerin provided the big swing in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run homer to left field that put the Marlins up 7-1 on the Cougars.
Game 2 - 4-1 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
The Marlins saw two runners cross the plate in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Howerin and a squeeze play by Taylor Galvin. Kandis Kresinske (2-1) did the rest, allowing just one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Leading 4-1 with the tying run coming to the plate in the seventh inning the Marlins turned to Shipp out of the bullpen. She enduced a groundball off the bat of Taylor Dix to end the game and pick up her first save of the season.
Bogan went 6-for-7 on the afternoon with five runs scored, an RBI, and seven stolen bases. Howerin posted a 3-for-5 day with a homer, four RBI, and three runs scored.
No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan (5-1) hosts the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast next weekend.
