Box Score SALEM, Va. -- A 17-game winning streak came to an end Friday night for the No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan College softball Marlins who were upset 2-0 by Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets in a second round game in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament.
It was one of the few times this season when the Marlins (29-5) failed to get the bats working. Virginia Wesleyan, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, managed only three hit, tying a season low number of hits first recorded on April 18 in a 3-1 loss at Eastern Mennonite University. VWC continues competition in elimination play on Saturday, April 24, at 9 a.m. when the Marlins take on the Wasps (24-11) of Emory & Henry College.
Randolph-Macon (24-10) used a hit, a VWC error, and a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. It was an advantage the Jackets would ride to the end as the offense would not spark for Virginia Wesleyan. R-MC added its only other run in the top of the seventh, setting it up with a lead-off triple.
Senior Kristina Karagiorgis (Ashburn/Briarwoods) took the pitching loss and had a 15-game winning streak snapped. She struck out seven batters, walked one, and gave up six hits. Nelda Bagley (16-4) emerged as the winning pitcher for R-MC. She struck out eight, walked two, and limited the Marlins to three hits.
Kayla Dost (Bristow/Nokesville Brentsville) and Taylor Galvin (Virginia Beach/Kempsville)both connected for a double each for VWC. Blake Henderson (Virginia Beach/Ocean Lakes) added a single.
