No-hitter highlights a Sunday sweep for No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Junior pitcher Kristina Karagiorgis (Ashburn/Briar Woods) pitched a no-hit 5-0 win against New York's Oneonta State University on Sunday to help Virginia Wesleyan College's No. 9-ranked softball Marlins to an undefeated weekend.

The Marlins (10-0) defeated Eastern Connecticut State University 4-2 in Sunday's first game and defeated Western Connecticut State University 7-1 and No. 18 Rowan University 6-3 on Saturday.

Karagiorgis struck out a season-high nine batters and walked three en route to the no-hitter. She also recorded a single in VWC's 11-hit offense, which included a triple by Kayla Malkos (Roanoke/Cave Spring) and a double each by junior Lindsey Inzana (Chesapeake/Grassfield) and rookies Blake Henderson (Virginia Beach/Ocean Lakes) and Liz Bailey (Chesapeake/Greenbrier Christian)

Karagiorgis improved her pitching record to 5-0, as did senior MacKenzie Creech (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange). Creech helped guide the Marlins to the win over ECSU's Warriors (0-4), strikingout eight batters in six innings.  She scrattered five hits and gave up two runs.  Sophomore Mary Shipp (Virginia Beach/First Colonial) pitched the final inning and picked up her third save of the season.

Virginia Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the Warriors tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the third, helped by a pair of hits and two Marlin errors.

VWC jumped back in front for good in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs off three hits.  Senior Tori Higginbotham (Glen Allen/J.R. Tucker) led off with a double and Malkos and Inzana followed her with RBI singles.

The Warriors did not threaten again until the top of the seventh when they put two runners on.  But, Shipp struck out two consecutive batters to end the game.

Virginia Wesleyan produced nine hits led by Malkos with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate. She also had three stolen bases.Courtney Bogan (Round Hill/Woodgrove) added two hits and two stolen bases.

Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and Alyssa Hancock (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) topped ECSU hitting with two singles each.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Tuesday, March 4, hosting Sweet Briar College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
