Softball tumbles twice at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Consistent offense eluded Virginia Wesleyan College's softball Marlins throughout an Old Dominion Athletic Conference twinbill at Guilford College on Sunday as the host Quakers posted back-to-back victories.

Virginia Wesleyan (25-9, 10-8) added to its woes with five errors in the first game as Guilford (25-13, 10-8) eked out a 2-0 win.  The Quakers jumped on the Marlins for eight runs in the second inning of the second game and rode that cushion to a 9-4 win, giving Guilford its second consecutive regular season sweep of VWC in two seasons.

Guilford scored solo runs in the fifth and the sixth innings to end a scoreless game in the opener, helped by two VWC errors in both innings.

Junior Leanna Prather (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) led VWC with a pair of singles in that game.  Rookies Tori Higginbotham (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Season Dailey (Norfolk, Va./Virginia Beach Frank W. Cox)led Marlin hitting in the second game with two hits each.  Dailey belted a three-run homer in the fifth to help the Marlins score four runs, wiping out Guilford's 9-0 lead.

Rookie MacKenzie Creech (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange) and sophomore Chrissy Crawford (Norfolk, Va./Granby) took the pitching losses for VWC.  Creech is now 14-4, Crawford is 11-5.
